PTA concludes “Cybersecurity Awareness Week” with little focus on redressal mechanisms

PTA’s flagship “Cybersecurity Awareness Week” event concluded this Wednesday. The campaign offered no fresh solutions to victims of cyber harassment, focusing instead on preventive mechanisms through awareness campaigns across a wide range of emerging digital trends. This included sessions on safe use of AI, online reporting, and digital footprints. Ultimately, the PTA encouraged new digital users to become responsible “Digital Citizens”, and sidelined discussions on legal redress mechanisms and institutional obstacles for victims. These institutional failures are evident in the slow responses of authorities like the NCCIA in resolving citizen complaints and grievances.

Notices were issued to the National Cyber Crime Investigation Authority by Lahore High Court (LHC) in regards to Saadur Rehman’s, aka Ducky Bhai, bail petition. The former YouTuber was arrested and charged for promoting illegal gambling applications on his social media account.

The petition asked the court to grant Rehman bail, while stating that all other suspects arrested at the same time as him have already been released. PTI MNA Booked Under Cybercrime Laws for comments regarding PM Shahbaz’s Egypt Trip

An FIR has been lodged at the NCCIA Cyber Crime Reporting Center against PTI MNA Shandana Gulzar for her alleged inflammatory and hateful posts regarding Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s trip to Egypt during the “Gaza Peace Summit”.  She is currently under investigation under  multiple sections of the PECA Act due to her allegations that PM Shahbaz was cordial with the Israeli premier during the Gaza Summit, despite Netanyahu not being present in Egypt for the Peace Agreement.

Over the last week, Shandana- along with other PTI affiliated accounts on X- posted low-quality images of what appeared to be a friendly meeting between Shahbaz Sharif and Israeli PM Netenyahu. Labelled as treasonous due to Pakistan’s position of non-recognition towards the Israeli state, these posts fuelled anxieties regarding Pakistan’s potential accession to the Abraham Accords- implying normalization with Israel. However, these rumors were quickly dispelled once it became clear that these pictures showed Shahbaz Sharif not with Netanyahu but rather the Armenian Prime Minister. PM Netanyahu, as was official news, was not present at the Gaza Summit.

Unlawful Disappearances of Senior Officers in NCCIA threatens security and governance

Serious questions have been raised surrounding the internal security of the National Cybercrime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) after several high-ranking officers mysteriously went missing over the last few weeks. The most recent incident took place on the 14th October when the Deputy Director of NCCIA was abducted from his home in Islamabad. Muhammad Usman’s wife, Rozina Usman filed an FIR asserting that four armed men in a White Toyota Corolla intercepted and abducted her husband at gunpoint.

As the case has progressed, numerous anomalies have been identified. CCTV footage shows that the Corolla in question was carrying a fake license plate, and according to Rozina’s lawyer, she was being pressured to withdraw the petition and is also currently missing. The IHC has directed the police to retrieve Usman within three days before the NCCIA’s Director and IG of Islamabad Police are summoned before the court. Considering the high-profile nature of individuals involved in these disappearances, a dangerous precedent is being set exposing vulnerabilities in the country’s security infrastructure

Former FIA Chief warns against “Surveillance Capitalist” objectives of digital technologies

Delivering a lecture at Bahria Town University on the instrumentalization of digital technologies by private companies, Dr Sanaullah Abbasi provided a critical lens on the economic logic dictating the flow of information in digital spheres. Using the term ‘surveillance capitalism’, he lamented on how the capitalistic drive for accumulation has turned human experience into a raw material processed into behavioral data. These objectives have created an apparatus of surveillance and an unprecedented centralization of information that is now being used to control political discourse and instrumentalize digital technologies to sustain authoritarian tendencies. Lastly, he encouraged students to reevaluate the rational models underpinning digital governance while demanding greater accountability and democratic oversight.

The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has launched an investigation into the alleged use of the PTI founder’s X (formerly Twitter) account to propagate an anti-state narrative.

A three-member team led by Ayaz Khan visited Adiala Jail to question the PTI founder. However, sources said he refused to cooperate, demanding the presence of his lawyers before responding.

Investigators asked who operates the account, from where it is accessed, to whom access has been given, and whether he was aware of anti-state content being posted. The PTI founder declined to disclose details, instead demanding a written questionnaire and legal representation.
