Pakistan summons Norwegian nationals for defamation  case

The National Cybercrime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) in Pakistan has summoned three Norwegian nationals in connection with an alleged online defamation campaign targeting businessman and Pakistani ambassador Umar Farooq Zahoor. The notices direct the three men to appear before investigations in Lahore and record their statements. Inquiries began after Zahoor filed a complaint in a Lahore court accusing the suspects, reporters for a Norwegian tabloid, of spreading defamatory allegations against him in collaboration with Indian media outlets. The publication falsely stated that Zahoor was being wanted by the Norwegian authorities.

National Agency Busts Illegal International Scam Operation in Karachi

The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency raided an illegal call centre in Karachi, arresting three individuals for scamming foreigners. Operating near Sharah e Faisal, the suspects allegedly impersonated bank representatives and debt settlement agents to defraud victims abroad. Authorities seized spoofing software and devices containing sensitive financial data of foreign nationals. The arrests were made under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act as amended in 2025. Investigations are currently expanding to trace international money laundering, hundi/hawala operations, and other associates involved in the network. This enforcement action targets fraudulent activities utilizing sophisticated technology to exploit digital financial systems globally within Sindh.

Journalist Sohrab Barkat given bail by IHC

Bail for journalist Sohrab Barkat has been restored by the Islamabad High Court in the last remaining cybercrime case filed against him by the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA).  After hearing Barkat’s petition challenging the cancellation of his bail, the IHC restored the bail, directing authorities to release him immediately. The case against the journalist stems from allegations of spreading misinformation about state institutions during an interview.

Zafar Iqbal has been given a three-day physical remand by a court in Islamabad after being arrested for allegedly promoting the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) on social media. Officials from the NCCIA requested the remand to recover and examine multiple social media accounts linked to him. Investigators claim that Iqbal has been spreading false propaganda against state institutions and was inciting and provoking the public through his online content.

Ducky Bhai indicted in gambling app case

Youtuber Saad ur Rehman, better known as Ducky Bhai, was formally indicted by a Lahore magistrate alongside his wife and others in connection with the alleged promotion of gambling and betting apps on social media. The case was registered by the NCCIA in June 2025 and has accused several influencers of using their platforms to advertise gambling apps for financial gain, which violates several provisions of PECA. The accused all pleaded not guilty.

NCCIA launches AI tool to curb online child exploitation

Pakistan has introduced a new AI-powered tool to strengthen its investigations on online child sexual exploitation and abuse. Called ‘Katalyst,’ the system was launched by the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) to help identify, prioritise, and analyze online evidence linked to exploitation cases which have increased with the expansion of digital spaces. Officials at the NCCIA believe the technology will improve the speed and accuracy of detecting and solving urgent cases and help restore children’s safety.

PTA concludes “Cybersecurity Awareness Week” with little focus on redressal mechanisms

PTA’s flagship “Cybersecurity Awareness Week” event concluded this Wednesday. The campaign offered no fresh solutions to victims of cyber harassment, focusing instead on preventive mechanisms through awareness campaigns across a wide range of emerging digital trends. This included sessions on safe use of AI, online reporting, and digital footprints. Ultimately, the PTA encouraged new digital users to become responsible “Digital Citizens”, and sidelined discussions on legal redress mechanisms and institutional obstacles for victims. These institutional failures are evident in the slow responses of authorities like the NCCIA in resolving citizen complaints and grievances.

YouTube content creators granted pre-arrest bail by Lahore Court

Popular Youtube content creators Rajab Butt and Nadeem Mubarik have been granted pre-arrest bail till January 6th. Both creators were implicated in multiple FIRs booked under various cybercrime provisions. These relate primarily to PECA-related provisions on the misuse of digital apps, promotion of gambling, and online harassment. Rajab Butt is further booked under blasphemy and cybercrime laws for causing a “religious stir” by allegedly naming his perfume brand after the blasphemy law in Pakistan’s Penal Code. In recent months, the NCCIA has clamped down on multiple YouTube content creators  for promoting gambling applications through their channels.

Notices issued by LHC to NCCIA on Ducky Bhai bail petition

Notices were issued to the National Cyber Crime Investigation Authority by Lahore High Court (LHC) in regards to Saadur Rehman’s, aka Ducky Bhai, bail petition. The former YouTuber was arrested and charged for promoting illegal gambling applications on his social media account. 

The petition asked the court to grant Rehman bail, while stating that all other suspects arrested at the same time as him have already been released. It further argued that prior to his arrest at the airport, where he was travelling for a work event, Rehman had not been issued any notice to appear for an inquiry.
