Fake: UAE is not deporting Pakistani nationals for political reasons

The Pakistani government has rejected several social media claims stating that the UAE is deporting Pakistani nationals on the grounds of political reasons. These reports are said to be part of a misinformation campaign that emerged after online posts alleged that deportations were linked to Pakistan’s diplomatic support for and allyship with Iran. Pakistan’s Interior Ministry and Foreign Office have both said that deportations were only related to routine immigration violations such as overstaying visas, illegal employment or incomplete documentation.

Arrest Over Social Media Post Raises Concerns on Freedom of Expression

Police in Islamabad arrested a citizen for sharing a social media post comparing the Tarnol railway crossing to the Strait of Hormuz, sparking concerns about misuse of legal provisions and restrictions on freedom of expression. The arrest was made under multiple sections of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), including disobedience to a public servant’s order and wrongful restraint, following a complaint by a police official. Authorities stated that the post had gone viral and was investigated amid heightened security measures and the imposition of Section 144 in the area due to ongoing geopolitical tensions. However, legal experts have questioned the validity of the charges, arguing that the statement falls within the scope of free expression and does not pose a threat to national security. The case has raised broader concerns about the criminalisation of online speech and the shrinking space for expression in Pakistan.

Photos of Pakistani actress posted to social media without consent

Pakistani actor Ramsha Khan publicly criticized social media pages for sharing her personal photos without consent in an attempt to gain engagement and spread rumors. She highlighted that reposting or publishing someone’s images without permission is unethical and that consent remains essential regardless of a person’s public personality. The incident sparked broader discussions online about digital consent, privacy and reflects a growing concern about the misuse of images in Pakistan with a lack of accountability on social media platforms.

PCB Fines Naseem Shah Rs20 Million Over Social Media Policy Violation

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has fined fast bowler Naseem Shah Rs20 million for violating clauses of his central contract and media policy following a controversial social media post. After reviewing his response and apology, a disciplinary committee concluded that contract violations had occurred, leading to the penalty. The incident has sparked debate around professional conduct, athlete expression, and the growing scrutiny of social media use by public figures in Pakistan.

Zuckerberg Defends Meta in Court as Youth Social Media Addiction Trial Continues

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg testified in a Los Angeles court, rejecting claims that he misled Congress about prioritising user engagement on its platforms during a landmark trial on youth social media addiction. Lawyers presented internal emails suggesting past goals to increase user time on apps, which Zuckerberg said reflected earlier strategies that have since evolved. The case, centred on Instagram’s impact on young users’ mental health, could lead to damages against Meta and influence global regulatory scrutiny of social media platforms.

TikTok Removed 25m videos from April-June over Pakistan-specific Guideline Violations

In its second quarterly report covering the months between April to June, TikTok removed a little over 25 million videos in Pakistan due to Community Guideline Violations. Globally, a total of 189 million videos were removed and this constitutes around 0.7 pc of total content uploaded on TikTok. These statistics reflect TikTok’s proactive steps in upholding Community Guidelines while tackling issues of sensitive content, misinformation, fake accounts, and privacy violations. However, TikTok’s high compliance rate, where over 94 pc of content is removed within 24 hours of being flagged, might also be a cause for concern. Due to the sheer volume of content being removed, it is difficult to assess the influence states like Pakistan may wield over private platforms like TikTok, and the extent to which they may employ vague stipulations within local community laws to strike down politically sensitive or critical content.

Fake job offers used to steal Pakistani data: PTA

A statement issued by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) this week warns citizens in Pakistan about an alleged Indian spy network that steals personal data by posting fake job offers. Bogus job offers posted on social media application LinkedIn usually guide applicants to WhatsApp and Telegram ‘recruitment hubs’ where they are asked to share sensitive information such as location, ID documents, and workplace details. These scams sometimes also feature “assessment” applications that act as a front for data-stealing tools used to extort information and sometimes even money.

Citizens of Pakistan are urged to be cautious of job offers online that aren’t posted by credible, verified organizations and to report anything suspicious to the FIA and NCERT departments as soon as possible.

Meta to expand “teen accounts” to Pakistani users

Meta has announced its intentions to expand “teen accounts” to Facebook and Messenger applications around the world. This feature was introduced last year and introduced safeguards that could limit content accessed by young users of the application. This is done by limiting accounts a teen account can interact with and filtering content. Meta has justified these new features as catering to parental concerns over unchecked and unsupervised teen access to content on social media. However, despite these concerns being prioritized in the area of content moderation, reports have surfaced criticizing Meta’s AI features of having extremely problematic and sensual conversations with young users. It remains to be seen whether content moderation and regulations apply to Meta’s rapidly expanding AI systems.

FBR finalizing taxation policy for TikTok Content Creators

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) informed the Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue that they’re in the final stage of drafting a taxation plan to be imposed on income earned by TikTok content creators. Senator Faisal Vawda argued that tax enforcement should start with Punjab since a significant portion of revenue is generated by Punjab-based TikTokers. While social media content creators have been viewed as a lucrative source of taxable revenue for the FBR, attention has surged following an investigation by the FBR into disproportionate filings by select celebrities and social media influencers. A Lifestyle Monitoring Cell has also been set up to monitor and scour through various social media applications to check for celebrities, influencers, and content creators who display excessive wealth without a proportionate contribution to their income.

September 15, 2025 - Comments Off on Resolution Submitted in the Punjab Assembly to Ban TikTok

Resolution Submitted in the Punjab Assembly to Ban TikTok

A resolution seeking a complete ban on TikTok in Pakistan has been submitted in the Punjab Assembly by opposition member Farrukh Javed Moon.

The resolution argues that a “TikTok mafia” is promoting obscenity and nudity through live chat, luring the younger generation, particularly children, toward immorality. It claims that young boys and girls engage in obscene conversations and encourage each other to immoral acts, which is contrary to Islamic social values.

It further states that youth are increasingly attracted to TikTok for cheap fame and money-making, creating disorder in society. The resolution urges the federal government to immediately impose a nationwide ban on TikTok and its live chat feature to protect young people from “moral destruction.”

It is noteworthy that TikTok has faced temporary bans in Pakistan in the past, largely over concerns of immoral content and its negative impact on users’ mental and moral development.
