Pakistan’s Supreme Court on September 17, 2026 suspended the 17-year prison sentences of human rights lawyer Imaan Mazari and her husband, lawyer Hadi Ali Charrha, and ordered their release on bail. The couple had been convicted in January under the PECA over social media posts that prosecutors said promoted anti-state narratives. They were granted bail while their appeals remain pending before the Islamabad High Court however, they were ultimately not released. Hours after the Supreme Court order, Islamabad police detained them in connection with a separate March 2025 case involving allegations of anti-government slogans.
