India has asked Meta to delay the rollout of WhatsApp’s new username feature, citing concerns that it could increase chances of online fraud, phishing, and impersonation amongst other scams. The feature, which would allow users to connect using unique usernames instead of sharing phone numbers, is meant to enhance privacy. However, Indian authorities fear fraudsters could exploit similar or misleading usernames to impersonate individuals, businesses, or government agencies, and target less tech-savvy users in online scams.
