Instagram removes end-to-end encryption

Meta has ended support for end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) direct messages on Instagram, saying very few users actually used the feature. The update took effect on 8 May 2026. The change means that Meta now has potential access to users' Instagram DMs for moderation, safety checks or legal requests. The company updated support pages earlier this year without making any prior public announcements. Privacy advocates have criticized Meta’s decision arguing that the encryption settings were never easy to find or made widely available.

Meta Found in Breach of EU Law Over Child Safety Failures

The European Commission has found Meta in preliminary breach of the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA) for failing to effectively prevent children under 13 from accessing Facebook and Instagram. The investigation revealed that Meta’s age verification systems were inadequate, allowing underage users to create accounts using false birthdates, while reporting tools were deemed ineffective.

Regulators stated that Meta failed to meet its own minimum age requirements and did not sufficiently mitigate risks such as cyberbullying, grooming, and exposure to harmful content. If upheld, the findings could lead to fines of up to 6% of the company’s global annual revenue.

Meta has disputed the findings, stating it continues to invest in age-detection technologies. The case reflects growing regulatory scrutiny across Europe over platform responsibility and child safety, with several countries considering stricter age restrictions on social media use.

Landmark trial in apps being designed for addiction begins

A landmark trial has begun in California as a 20-year-old woman is suing Meta and Google (owners of Facebook, Instagram and YouTube) for allegedly deliberately designing their applications to be addictive to children. Lawyers claim that internal documents from the big tech companies show that platforms are being “built to addict the brains of children on purpose,” and that early exposure to these features has contributed to serious mental illness in children. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is expected to testify as part of the trial, with company attorneys saying that mental health struggles suggested by the complainant may stem from family difficulties and personal history rather than social media applications.

Meta to expand “teen accounts” to Pakistani users

Meta has announced its intentions to expand “teen accounts” to Facebook and Messenger applications around the world. This feature was introduced last year and introduced safeguards that could limit content accessed by young users of the application. This is done by limiting accounts a teen account can interact with and filtering content. Meta has justified these new features as catering to parental concerns over unchecked and unsupervised teen access to content on social media. However, despite these concerns being prioritized in the area of content moderation, reports have surfaced criticizing Meta’s AI features of having extremely problematic and sensual conversations with young users. It remains to be seen whether content moderation and regulations apply to Meta’s rapidly expanding AI systems.

Representatives from Meta have said that they are working on adjusting their AI policies that would limit minors from interacting with specific AI characters that can prove to be harmful to their physical and mental health.

Instagram update allows you to see reel likes

In a recent update on Meta’s social media platform Instagram, users can now repost their friends' content and access their follower’s shared reels on a new ‘Friends’ tab. Additionally, a map feature allows you to see in real-time where you and your followers are. Representative from Instagram, Adam Mosseri, has called this update a new way “to connect with the people you most care about,” instead of simply consuming content based off of your algorithm and from people you don’t know.
