The National Assembly Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue, chaired by MNA Naveed Qamar, rejected a proposal in the Finance Bill 2026 that would have granted the Federal Board of Revenue direct access to taxpayers’ bank account data held in scheduled banks. Committee members warned the data could be misused. The FBR argued the information was already with the State Bank and would only be checked against income tax returns. The committee rejected both the proposal and FBR bids to tighten penalties for filers and non-filers in certain cases, directing the FBR to redraft the relevant amendments before resubmission.
