Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar announced that the government has revised the Pakistan Telecommunication (Re-organization) (Amendment) Bill, 2026, to explicitly require a property owner’s consent before telecom infrastructure such as cables, towers, or equipment can be installed on private land. The change follows weeks of objections from senators, who warned an earlier clause treating a property owner’s silence after two notices as “implied consent” could conflict with constitutional protections. The bill had been passed by the National Assembly in June but stalled in the Senate Standing Committee on IT, prompting Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to form a review committee. IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja said the reforms are meant to support 5G rollout and broadband expansion without compromising citizens’ rights.
