The European Union has proposed legislation to restrict social media access for children under 15, aiming to improve wellbeing and online safety. Under the EU Kids Act, children under 13 would be banned from social media, while those aged 13-15 would access platforms for one hour daily through parent-managed mini accounts. Only users aged 15 and above could create independent accounts. These rules are expected to cover platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, AI chatbots and online games. Companies would be required to ensure safety by design. The proposal has raised concerns about enforcement, privacy and freedom of expression just as France’s similar legislation being blocked by its top court.
