X suspends revenue sharing for AI war videos

Social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has announced that creators who post AI generated videos of armed conflicts without clearly disclosing that they are AI will be suspended from its revenue-sharing programme for 3 months. This decision comes amid concerns about misinformation during the ongoing war involving the United States, Israel and Iran. Repeat violations could result in permanent removal from the Creator Revenue Sharing programme and enforcement will rely on the platform’s crowd-sourced fact-checking system, Community Notes. Advances in AI have made it easy to create convincing but misleading footage which can destroy public opinion and cause panic.

Viral video of remarks by Senate opposition is fake

A viral video claiming that Pakistan’s Senate opposition leader has said that Pakistan allowed the United States to use its airspace for attacks against Iran has been found to be false by iVerify. The video began spreading on X (formerly Twitter) showing Allama Raja Nasir Abbas making controversial remarks about Pakistan's involvement in US military operations against Iran. It was determined that the video was manipulated and the original audio was replaced with AI-generated information.

US banks on high alert for cyberattacks

US financial institutions are on a heightened alert for possible cyberattacks as tensions escalate following the US-Israel war with Iran. Banking executives and cybersecurity experts say geopolitical conflicts often trigger increased cyber activity, particularly against critical financial infrastructure. US intelligence has suggested that pro-Iran "hacktivist" groups may launch low-level attacks that might cause heavy internet traffic. Groups such as the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA) say banks are closely monitoring the situation and strengthening their operational resilience. In the past, Iran has used cyber capabilities against commercial targets and while major disruptions are unlikely, smaller incidents can still affect functionality.

CERT investigates recent cyberattacks in Pakistan

Pakistan’s National Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) has launched an investigation after several television channels, websites and mobile applications within the country faced coordinated cyberattacks. The incident, occurring on Sunday night, prompted government officials and cybersecurity experts to review the situation. Initial findings show that the primary attack targeted the country’s state-owned satellite system, PakSat, which helped disrupt transmissions across multiple TV channels. The government claims no state or private websites were affected. Alerts and advisories have been issued by CERT to government departments and key private institutions.

Journalist Sohrab Barkat given bail by IHC

Bail for journalist Sohrab Barkat has been restored by the Islamabad High Court in the last remaining cybercrime case filed against him by the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA).  After hearing Barkat’s petition challenging the cancellation of his bail, the IHC restored the bail, directing authorities to release him immediately. The case against the journalist stems from allegations of spreading misinformation about state institutions during an interview.

IHC bench hearing appeals for Imaan and Hadi dissolved

Islamabad High Court (IHC) has dissolved the bench hearing appeals filed by human rights lawyers Imaan Mazari and her husband Hadi Ali against their conviction in the controversial social media post case. While hearing an application seeking an early hearing for the appeals, Justice Muhammad Asif ordered the court to place the case file before Chief Justice Dogar and to form a new bench for the hearing. The appellants argued that despite earlier proceedings, no effective hearing date has been set.

Cybercrime investigation unit for Punjab province approved

Maryam Nawaz, the chief minister of Punjab has approved plans for the establishment of the province’s first Cybercrime Investigation Unit (CCIU) as part of new measures to strengthen digital security and surveillance. The new unit will investigate cybercrime cases and will be supported by district-level cybercrime centers across the province. The provincial government also plans on creating a special protection cell to specifically assist women affected by digital offences.
