Affordable 5G hits roadblock

Plans to make 5G-enabled smartphones more affordable in Pakistan have been delayed as telecom stakeholders have failed to respond to the government’s proposal. The initiative would allow customers to buy smartphones through instalment plants and help low-income users access 5G. While companies such as Jazz, Ufone and Zong have publicly shown support for the proposal, the Ministry of IT claims some responses are still pending.

5G Trial Rollout Approved for Gilgit-Baltistan

The rollout of 5G in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) has moved forward after the GB Council approved policy directives for test trials in the region. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), following authorisation from the Ministry of IT, is expected to direct telecom operators to begin preparations for trials soon.

Four telecom operators, including Special Communications Organisation (SCO), which operates in GB and AJK, are expected to participate. The trials will utilise key 5G spectrum bands, including 2300 MHz, 2600 MHz, and 3500 MHz, allowing companies to test infrastructure compatibility and plan for future spectrum auctions.

The development marks a significant step toward expanding digital connectivity in GB, which was previously excluded from the national 5G auction due to separate regulatory frameworks. Experts say the trials could improve access to high-speed internet and support digital inclusion in the region.

5G Expected to Boost Internet Speeds and Connectivity Across Pakistan

Telecom experts say the rollout of 5G in Pakistan could increase internet speeds by three to five times, significantly improving user experience and easing network congestion. While only around 5 million users currently have 5G-enabled devices, broader deployment is expected to benefit existing users as well through better spectrum allocation. The technology could also expand access to high-speed internet via fixed wireless access, reducing reliance on fibre infrastructure. With rising data consumption and growing demand from Pakistan’s IT and freelance sectors, improved connectivity could enhance productivity, enable real-time collaboration, and support the development of smart home and smart city technologies.
